David’s first exploration into lighting in 1995, the Hinaki Pendant was inspired by traditional Māori fish traps, or hinaki, crafted from woven vines—some with beautifully intricate forms. This design marks the beginning of David’s journey in creating lighting that blends artistry, tradition, and function.

Hinaki is available in three sizes—500mm, 900mm, and 1400mm tall—and made from bamboo plywood. Offered in a range of colors, painted on one or both sides, the pendant is shipped as a compact kitset—on average 1/30th the volume of the assembled light—to reduce shipping impact and minimize environmental footprint. Each kit includes instructions, spare pieces, 2m flex, and a bulb holder (bulb and ceiling rose not included). Assembly service is available at both of our showrooms.
