Stellar Works & Noma Kyoto

An Immersive Pop-up Dining Experience

Noma is one of the world’s most notable and acclaimed restaurants, not only three-michelins-starred, but also a progressive and seasonal culinary phenomenon. Following its first residency in Tokyo in 2015, Noma is back in Japan and will run a pop-up in Kyoto from March till May 2023. Led by
co-owner and renowned chef René Redzepi, the Noma team will kickstart
a re-invention of its gastronomy to reflect its temporary home.

The 250 sqm existing dining space has been transformed under the guidance of stylist Christine Rudolph.

Stellar Works longstanding design collaboration with OEO studio are behind the design concept for Nora Kyoto, blending Scandinavian aesthetics with Japanese sensibilities, to bring about a refined fashion of craftsmanship and materiality to elevate the eating experience.

Noma Kyoto will showcase Aya, a collection of dining tables and chairs by Danish designers OEO studio. The Aya collection, a collaboration with Stellar Works and OEO Studios shares an aesthetic for clean, minimal design. Aya’s elegant and light wooden frame is inspired by Asian
culture and design and effortlessly holds the soft embracing shell
and seat.

For a 3-month pop-up, the space has been immaculately designed, taking full advantage of the high-ceiling dining area that offers stunning views of the garden. The use of dimmed lighting and welcoming acoustics creates an intimate atmosphere, inviting diners to fully immerse themselves.

Working closely with a Tenugui maker and Copenhagen-based Natural Material Studio, the main dining room ceiling resembles an underwater kelp forest. The earthy colour palette enhances the connection to the local environment, with natural tones and textures creating a warm and
tactile ambiance.

While comfort and durability lie at the core of the chair’s design, it is complemented by an elegant and timeless silhouette. The design of the Aya tables mirror the structure and details of the chair frame, resulting is a coherent and pared back collection suitable for domestic and hospitality settings alike. The Slow collection by Space Copenhagen also features within the restaurant, its refined silhouette perfectly reflecting the aesthetic. OEO Studio is a Copenhagen-based interdisciplinary design studio, with a project office in central Tokyo. Working in the fields of product design, residential architecture, hospitality, commercial interiors, creative direction and design strategy. A dedicated and award winning group, deeply rooted in Scandinavian values and design heritage infused with Asian aesthetics. View the Slow dining chair here.

Their approach is holistic and dedicated to a narrative with a keen attention to detail which is evident throughout, with careful consideration given to every aspect of the space, from the choice of materials to the arrangement of furniture and décor.
